One-to-one
tutoring
Since 1982, thousands of volunteers have worked within the community
teaching adults to read or speak English, as well as teach their
students skill needs in everyday life. Our volunteers provided over
125,000 hours of instruction to their students in LVMC's last fiscal
year.
The LEARN Center
Students attend lab classes to improve their reading, comprehension
skills, English, or to prepare for the GED exam using extensive software
in the lab. LVMC now offers four LEARN Center locations to better serve the community.
Community Technology Center
This state-of-the-art computer lab teaches adults "computer
literacy" which includes the basics of using a computer, accessing
the Internet, and using Microsoft programs. The goal of the Technology
Center is to decrease the number of individuals impacted by the
"digital divide."
Family Literacy
LVMC expanded into the area of working with families in
the elementary school setting in 1995. We provide training in
basic education and parenting for the parents of pre-school and
kindergarten children, addressing the critical cause and effect link
between illiteracy and low economic prospects for families.
Workplace Education
LVMC has been developing and working with employers to provide services
for employees who will be able to increase job performance by increasing
their learning. Since 1997, LVMC has put an emphasis on broadly
expanding our workplace programs and successfully has developed a
stronger workplace assessment program to help link services with new
industries.
